Back To The Future

Or rather right this minute.

I ask you in all seriousness, how appreciative do you have to be when they bring you a mouse?

I know they haven't been able to go out for days. Even Gus knows when too cold is too cold.

But tonight they hit the great outdoors.

And except for Lucy's victory lap around the house ( minus mouse I can assure you) they're staying out and hunting.

I guess they're worried I'm running out of provisions without S-Man and his almost daily runs to the grocery store?

Rest assured there's plenty of food for everyone here, fresh for me and canned for the hunters.

There's also a trickle of early spring flowers coming into the house. Tulips in the living room, ranunculus in the dining room, a big, fat white rose in the kitchen.

Which brings me to my next question. And I think we all know where I'm going with this.

Flowers? In the house? Next Monday?

You in?

Surely we can all grab a handful of daffodils or a potted primrose and spread some joy.

Dark and cold days outside, flowers, light and a sweet potato in the oven inside.

Sound good?

P.S. we can post an old picture of ourselves in the post for extra bonus points and Lucy says she'll throw in a mouse.....

PPS. I'm back to tell you there's a second mouse by the back door. I'm trapped and will be unable to leave my house.

  4. Oooooh yellow tulips! Now Jane where does one get that in 8 degree weather? Friends in high places. Do you have a lot of pines? This goes with a mouse story that connects to Jen's country weekend post...I'll shut up.

  5. I have a whole new level of gratefulness, weather wise, since living in SoCal now for almost three weeks-I almost hyperventilated when I saw the spread at the local Home Depot. I brought home hot pink stock! For outside! In JANUARY!

My cat Stanley ( who has been gone for some time now) used to bring me a mouse almost daily-and he would bound in and drop it right in his food bowl...I finally starting using a fish net to scoop up the poor mouse and return it to mother earth.

  8. Years ago, my cat Simon would present me with an eviscerated gopher spread out on the front door mat. He was a super star hunter: gophers have vicious teeth.
Guess I'll have to sift through the photo basket for something from the 20thc. for Monday.

  9. Think of it this way ... a dead mouse or two, presented by the proud hunter(s) is much better than the possibility of having said mice, alive and well, living under the same roof with you. We once had an indoor/outdoor cat who was a superb hunter. Our sister kitties are pretty proficient, though they are forced to contain their hunting to the inside of this old place. Maggie, our senior cat, is (and has always been) completely useless for pest control.

Flowers in January? I'm sure I can come up with something.

  10. You HAVE to be appreciative. As Hartwood Roses said, better dead than living in the house with you! Thank you for not posting that picture. Pretty tulips!

  11. Never got a gift of mouse, but there was that one prize Bantam hen that the dog brought home to me from a neighbor who raised them for show ... does that count?

Happy to participate in FITH as long as i can gather them from another (retail) source! I'm in.

  12. I have an amaryllis that seems to be coming along despite my not having even planted it yet. I don't think it will be ripe by Monday though. I'll see what I can scrounge up.

Thankful I don't have to deal with the mice!

  14. Love you, love your cats and mice! Oh, and thanks for the flowers! It is at least 6 months till we see these in Vermont!

  15. Man up, Jane. They've only just begun to limber up. Spring mice are going to be numerous!! I usually thank them politely, dispose of the dead ones where the cats can see me but not reach in for the bodies and bring them in again (handy litter bin across the road!). The live ones get smuggled out and released where the cats may not find them again.
I'm in for FITH if I remember. I only have some hideous mixed flowers from the supermarket, so will see what I can rustle up from the hedgerows tomorrow.....

  16. They bring mice because they love you....:) Timely article in the Times today about the book "Cat Sense" and how it explains cats' behavior.
