I'm Giving It All Up To You

I blame it all on my IPad.

I can barely remember how to use my camera, I just wander around with the IPad taking pictures and posting them to Instagram.

I download book after book from the library and down them like vodka.

I read my email, do my banking and read your blog posts on my device. And when I don't comment right away it's because it's hard to comment. Much easier to post a heart on a photo I like.

I always mean to get over to the computer and respond but them I find myself downloading another book or looking at pictures on Instagram.

Hello, my name is Jane and I'm addicted to my IPad.

This weekend I was having a Sunday. This included garden time, a nap, making chicken tortilla soup and lounging on the couch, the front patio and the back deck ( I'm a wanderer) with the aforementioned device, the Sunday Times, a hardback and the new Bon Appetit.

At some point I strolled into the kitchen to ice myself one more latte and noticed how pretty the light was at 4:00 on an October afternoon.

I started to grab my phone but resisted and got my camera.

The grapes were luminous.
Lucy languid.
The back room quietly lit.

I've got to do this more often, I thought.

Does anyone remember a strange movie from a 100,000,000 years ago called "Until The End Of The World"?

The husband of a blind woman had invented a recording device to record and translate brain impulses thus allowing her to see the images. Her son was traveling around the world filming friends and family so she could stay connected. (This is a very simplistic review of a crazy mixed up movie).

The stranger thing about this device was that it allowed seeing people to record their dreams and they became addicted to it, watching their dreams over and over, they were addicted to their dreams as they would be to a drug.
How could that happen I used to wonder.

Then I got my IPad.
Now I see.

So to speak.

Anybody?

Can you hear me out there?

  1. I understand! So much of it is good...... There was a time I always had a book going. Now? I'm spending too much time reading wonderful blogs such as yours.......I, too, worry about our love of our devices.......the sign of the times? Lisa

  2. Six months ago I thought I'd never give up my Blackberry, then the camera on it broke and I broke down and got an iPhone, and am now an instagram addict. It's a slippery slope. Now I'm thinking about getting an iPad mini to take instead of a laptop when I travel, now that I'm no longer a total hermit. Anyway, your pictures always make me happy, wherever they are.

    1. Oh You'll love your mini, it makes travel time fly. Books, pictures, music.....I do not take mine to work. I'd always be locked in the bathroom!

  3. I don't have a cell phone or whatever. I know myself. I will say that I'm addicted to your cute kitty pics and don't get me started on two deck Freecell on the laptop - clicky, clicky, clicky!!! Thank heavens playing games at work is illegal!

Sometimes you just have to let a Sunday be a Sunday like back in the old days before all the stores were open all weekend ;-)

You really like reading books on your pad? I spend so much time staring at computer screens at work that I want the real deal. I'm a huge library fan - I have to be since I don't have any more book shelf space and I have a LOT!

    1. I didn't expect to enjoy a book on a screen, but oh how I do. The light is great for reading in bed, I can get a new library book any hour of the day or night. I never have to be without reading material again.

But, you can't take it in the bath. For this I have hardbacks.

  4. I get visually overwhelmed on Instagram, so I follow very few people, and almost solely those who have cute kids that I don't get to see either:). So, in other words, I'll be here if you are...

    1. Oh I'll be here, and I'd be here more if I could post from that damn device.

I live vicariously thru Instagram. Love it.

  5. My iPad follows me around the cabin. It's an addiction.I try to monitor myself. I fail.
I also have a Mac and an iPhone but the iPad is my constant home companion. On the bright side- it does not have WiFi so I can't take it places with me.
    Totally totally understand.

    1. Oui, mademoiselle. If I type a comment on my IPad and make a mistake, and you know that often happens, I delete the word but then can't type another word in it's place. What am I doing wrong?
      Come back little Sheba!

    2. Are you talking about a comment on your blog? Cause I think it's Blogger that is having the problem, it happened to me before.

I wish I could come back!! Still looking for jobs right now...

  10. Totally addicted to my Android pad. Always have library books ready to go. Even bought a larger purse so I can carry it ... always. Now, if I could figure out how to upload photos to do the blog from it...

    Enjoy!

  11. Haven't done much blogging lately, but it is difficult from ipad. However, it is my constant companion for reading- books and blogs, Instagram, Facebook, and email. I do comment from it all the time. Can be a bit ornery with correcting mistakes, but then the convenience is worth it. Have to dust the spider webs from the laptop to use it! Photos On iPad have not been the best lately... I think it's me, not the device and Instagram photo are great. Oh... I am hooked on Solitaire...what's with that?

  13. I hear you.

I have found that I do not have the willpower to exercise moderation and have to completely shut down once a week, usually Friday and Saturday. I turn off my phone and my laptop and enter a different world. It's pretty awesome. Sometimes I consider staying in that world, but then I wouldn't know people like you. It's a definite balancing act, one I haven't come close to mastering. It gets more and more complicated as everything we do is linked to our damn phones. We were recently at the botanical garden and the lady at the information desk was telling us to just go to blah blah whatever on our phones for more information. We didn't have our phones. So we were out of luck. This is becoming more and more common. I wonder if we will soon be living in a place where we must have our phones with us at all times, where we will need them for everything... Creepy.

I am intrigued by your movie. Dream addiction. I can see it.
