Still Life With Iris

Saturday morning 7:00am: flea market. I need nothing, but I never let that stop me.

Enameled bread tin now holding the kittens, all right, all right, the cats crunchies. $5.00

A wooden Kraft cheese box put to work holding kitchen soaps. Also $5.00

3 pairs of pillowcases, some embroidered, the other appliqued. All ironed. This will never happen again. Do you think I can take them back for refreshing after washing?  $10.00

And a large glass jar that formerly held Necco candies, not yet repurposed. And ideas? $8.00

Sunday was all fun in the sun with hours in the garden and a visit to a garden center.

I have solved the mowing problem. I suggested to my next door neighbor that if he would mow for me I would weed for him. And share my driveway full of mulch. But he has to haul and spread his own mulch.

He's in. So Nelda if you're reading this from Afghanistan, relax. Your crazy weeding friend and neighbor has taken charge.

My garden looks like hell but your bed with the baptisia and beautiful yellow iris is a weed free zone. Mulch and pictures to come.

xo Jane

  1. NEVER heard of NECCO candy! Just wafers... suppose that IS candy. The NECCO factory is here in Cambridge.

I knew you'd figure out the lawn. A good swap.

You scored with the crate and bread box. And who doesn't love old percale linens ... embroidered or plain!

    1. They're percale? See what I learn from blogging?

A good swap indeed. I would have scrubbed their floors to get out of mowing!

  2. I avoid flea markets because I live in a one bedroom apartment. Really love your purchases, though. The Necco jar would be easy for me--candy :)

Sounds like a win-win with the mowing and weeding!

  4. I don't know; I think I'd rather mow than weed.

I love all the little vases on the windowsill.

  5. I'd rather weed than mow. Spent the day weeding, mowing, planting and preening the garden today. I could fill that Necco jar with a nice cocktail now!

  6. Seashells in the Necco wafer jar, perhaps? When in
Cambridge, i look for the old factory every time to make sure it's still there. Heading for Boston metro next week and wondering if it will feel different after 4/15 events. My family is only one town away from Watertown where they
do their big shopping and it was a very nervous-making
time for all of us. Hard to imagine a massive shoot- out and possible explosions 3-4 blocks away from one's own
    Target and Costco, no?
peace be with you, no longer Peggy.

  8. Sweet domesticity, beautiful colors and light. Love the pottery on the windowsill and the colors reflected in those amazing iris. Love the bread box for kitty treats and the box for your soaps--another pretty picture! Your bed looks so crisp and comfortable, ready for a Sunday nap with Lucy.

  10. Hey! We call them "crunchies" as well! Our crunchies box is not that big though. Maybe we'll protest to management...

  11. Jane, dear... Neccos in the Necco jar! What else? Good trade, i think, on the grass.

If you will come for a little visit, i'll let you lean against my pillow. How can you pass up that offer?

  12. Such lovely finds! Enjoy your crisp, pretty pillowcases. As a little girl, I learned to iron by ironing our pillowcases on wash day. Your picture reminded me of the clothesline dried pillowcases all sprinkled and ready for ironing... I could almost smell the sunshine!

  13. Hi Jane, your long lost Blighty pal here - so sorry for the lack of comments, it is exam central here for my kids here, mania in the garden and there are not enough hours in the day so I have taken some time in my long weekend to catch up on my favourite blogs and have loved reading your last few posts. So glad to hear of your fun in the sunshine, garden blooming, neighbourly arrangements, delicious food and the finding of some peace going on round at yours. All sounds GOOD. Very much love from here. and a little bread bin envy! x

  14. Great finds! I never pass up nice pillowcasses as I love to mix and match (well, not really match). I don't iron them but have been known to pop them in the dryer for a bit to de-wrinkle..cause I'm weird about sheets not being 'just right'..might be a princess and the pea thing from childhood, ha!

Great deal you made with the neighbor..I hate mowing too but don't much like weeding either..guess I'd be in a real bind...I do love to do windows..that might work!

The candy jar, well, of course it should have candy and from the Necco co. so I checked out their website and found they have more candies than I thought..here it is. http://www.necco.com/
I think that colorful jawbreakers would look great too! xo

  15. I prefer to watch as someone else mows AND weeds, I'll dig. Flea markets are treasure troves, I once found embroidered linen pillow cases from the 40's packaged in an unopened box, ding, ding, ding...jackpot. I think they were $10.00. Love yours, and the Necco jar, am in agreement with most. Candy.

  19. I know....I need nothing...less than nothing, but a flea market or a thrift store stops me in my tracks. Great finds and I love what you've done so far!
