I'm Sexy And I Know It

I'm done.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to hold the proms of the two biggest high schools in Arlington on the same night should be tarred and feathered.

But it won't be by me.  I'm too tired.

While three designers spent two days assembling 100's of corsages and adding the requested ribbon colors, ("Blue, light blue, like a swimming pool?". You mean teal?  "No, blue". "Gold like an Oscar dress, gold")  I did all the other work. Which is in itself plentiful and is usually done by myself and two other designers.

So at the end of the day I was unusually tonguetied when one of the owners asked me what I was going to do to relax tonight.  Cook a delicious dinner he wondered aloud?  Maybe, I said.
But first, I told him,I was going home to read the the last 50 pages of the godawful new Dan Brown book "Inferno" he had passed on to me.

The only reason I bothered to read past the first chapter is that I am such a fast reader I can process junky writing as quickly as an Olympian athlete can metabolize calories.

But these were empty calories indeed.

And rather than a delicious dinner I scrambled some eggs with a chicken sausage, added a bit of cheese and toasted a whole grain english muffin which I washed down with lashings of cold water. It's 90degrees here.

Now I'm going to beg the kittens to come inside, take a cool shower and go to bed with an ice pack and an Elinor Lipman book "My Latest Grievance"

For tomorrow is another day and another prom.

But it is the first Saturday  of the month and will start at 7:00 am at the local flea market.

So tell me,what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious weekend?

  1. Oh Jane... I am breathless just reading this! I really can't imagine all those corsages. Take heart.. Here in S GA all the girls carry nosegays of lovely flowers and pretty ribbons. I can't imagine the work. Thankfully, only one high school in our community! Hope you get some time for rest! Susan

  3. We built a pond last fall...and this weekend we will finally have summer-ish temps so we call finish it off, put in the pump, etc.

There's a lupine festival in Bend, and a Saturn star party late Saturday night as well. Lots of fun things to choose from. I remember when my kids went to prom-I did their corsages! I cannot imagine doing that by the hundreds...yikes!

Library just sent me an email reminder to pick up my holds. It's like Christmas :)

  4. Wow! That sounds exhausting! Next year, let me know ahead of time and I will fix you guys lunch. If I had one wild and precious weekend, I would learn how to surf. It's something I really want to do before I die, but I think I might be too old (and too out of shape). Alas!

  7. Well done you.

Now, I think you really might have a tough job on your hands convincing "the kittens to come inside, take a cool shower and go to bed with an ice pack and an Elinor Lipman book" but I'm rooting for ya! :)

    Sweet dreams kitties!

    1. Paul, right? I did manage the ice pack and 10 minutes of reading. The kittens weren't quite as eager as I was to call it a night!

  8. Until I met you, I never thought about the tribulations of a florist on holidays and occasions that have evolved to require flowers. You have opened my eyes, Jane, dear.

This weekend for me, as it is every year around this time, is devoted to the roses. Things are in full bloom here, despite the heat, and I have one more open garden to hostess on Sunday. Today, I am packing my things and giving a propagation workshop for the Richmond Rose Society. I imagine there will be some junk shopping in there, too, if time permits.

  9. My head is spinning. I know what you mean about reading bad novels. I always feel trashed at the end when I power through a plot-only driven book.

At six tomorrow morning, Saint Charlie and his crew are coming to whip the front yard into shape. Which means I won't be sleeping in much, but o. so worth it. And then I'll prepare the vegetable plot when the backyard goes into shade.

Find anything at the Flea Market?

  11. Oh bless you! So good to hear you had a good read to escape with for the evening. My weekend plans have been somewhat detoured by the weather. Oh well, I have a good book as well. Hugs! Bonnie

  12. Well Jane, good luck with the rest of the weekend! Does it help to think about the happiness those lovely corsages will bring to so many lovely young ladies? Hope so!
As for Elinor Lipman, she's a tonic, indeed, for what ails us. Just finished reading her latest novel, The View from Penthouse B and am now looking forward to reading her latest collection of essays, titled "I Can't Complain."
Maybe you can order in some Chinese tonight??
    Greetings from sunny, cool Denver.

  13. I went out to do a little weeding at 6:30 this morning. I love the quiet of the morning. I seem to have the place to myself. I'm being taken over by some really agressive weed and it's driving me crazy. I may pull a whole section of the garden and start from scratch...after everything blooms.

And then just trying to beat the heat. 94 here this afternoon and I think a few new A/C units are in order. They're just not cutting it.

    Rest those sore fingers.

  14. Aach! Dan Brown? Did your IQ just drop by 50 points? Whoever passed that on to you and forced you to read it should tarred and feathered. (A friend did that to me years ago with "The DaVinci Code", needless to say we are no longer friends). Your dinner sounds absolutely delicious. Have a nice relaxing Sunday...and Monday.

  16. The woman who cuts my hair dreads prom-time--I never thought about what you florists must go through. Carpal tunnel?

Elinor Lipman is such fun-- didn't know she had a new book out.

  17. Even though I'm sorry that was so exhausting for you, I have to say that I was struck by the fact that I've never known anyone who worked in the flower business, so it's actually interesting and fun to read about from your perspective! Hopefully you are recovered from your busy prom time at work!
