Keeping It Simple

Not ten minutes after I hit publish on my last post another neighbor showed up at the door. Was word  out on the block I was giving thanks?

He was carrying a large bagful of cherry tomatoes from his CSA box.

This answered the eternal question " What's for dinner".

Grabbing a bowl I finely chopped 3 cloves of GG's garlic, sliced about a cup of garden basil, halved many tomatoes, diced up several ounces of mozzarella cheese, added 1/2 cup of olive oil, ground black pepper and salt, I gave it all a stir, covered the bowl and let it sit and percolate for about 2 hours.

Then I cooked a pound of pasta, I used penne but any would do.  After tossing the warm pasta with the room temperature sauce and picking out a few cubes of melty mozzarella, I grated a shower of fresh Parmesan cheese over all and served.

And gave another thank you to the block.  Dinner in the hood, from the hood.  Nothing could be finer.

  1. Sounds great! Wish I could get Mitchell to eat pasta with something other than red sauce! But I could have thrown on some red sauce for the pasta, and used the gift as my salad, so it would have worked that way, too.

Are you packed? Time is ticking down... tick, tock. xo

  3. hi janie,

i need to do a post on this too. but i prob won't b/c you are doing it better than i could. it's like a veritable swap meet of fruit and vegetables around here. every day i wake and open the front door to find new ingredients for the day. summer is wonderful that way here. whatever they bring me i make into jam and then give them a jar. yesterday i peeled 44 oranges for marmalade. that's way to many oranges for anyone to peel in a day. and don't get me started on the tomatoes...

your neighbors sound so wonderful. lucky you.

  4. This is one of my favorite "lazy" meals. Quick easy and delicious. Sometimes I'll use stale bread instead of pasta to make a panzanella salad. People will think you're better than the sliced bread.
