When I'm Alone

S-man is off on a 36 hour adventure with a buddy that involves massive amounts of food, 3 fishing poles, a net, a sleeping bag, alcohol, a kayak, barrier islands and big fish stories.

I had just read somewhere that we are our truest selves when we're alone.

If this is correct, my truest self reads outside until it gets dark while eating an apple slathered with peanut butter. Arranges some flowers, makes a huge mess, sweeps then mops the kitchen floor.

Runs the vacuum cleaner in the living room, toasts a piece of bread, tops with mayonnaise, avocado, mozzarella cheese, basil and eats it in two gulps. Then throws in a load of laundry.

My truest self seems to like to wear a sawed off pair of sweats that hits oh so not becomingly at the calf and a shrunken tshirt.

My TS is answering emails from people on Match wondering what books I have read recently and what I cooked for dinner.

Tomorrow I'm meeting a virtual stranger for coffee after physical therapy.

I'll be in gym clothes and have a messy hair thing going on after my neck and shoulder massage.

Looks like my TS is coming with.

Love me, love my truest self.

I'll take a big breath. You cross your fingers.

What does your TS get up to when you're all alone?

  2. I've just had a week of that - scruffy old jeans or shorts, ditto Tshirts, thick socks, eating either salad-with-bocconcini or far too much bread. Not doing housework. And this morning had MASSIVE clean-up as I have a plane to meet in an hour. Gotta de-oven the quiche, hide it from the cats and run...

  3. Cooking, baking, reading, sometimes ironing (ugh, ugh ugh), sitting there and thinking, or not. Have a nice coffee date, hope the other person shows up as truest self.

    1. Me too. Your list all sounds good except the ironing. Can't do.

  4. I don't know that I could take my truest self to a coffee date...I might have to wash my hair first. Because when I am alone, it just gets pinned up everywhere. :)
Well, I see you read my post so you know what I do when I'm alone - movies, long baths and lots of coffee are always at the top of my list.
    Enjoy yourself!

  5. I'm doing a week of that right now while my SO is off coincidentally also doing the fishing thing, tho from a large boat way out in the ocean. My TS leaves art supplies on every flat surface, washes only the one dish, knife, fork and spoon that I use all week, never cooks more than to push the microwave buttons, goes to bed at 830 and reads till 11, puts nightgown on the instant I get home from work, talks out loud to the animals just like they were people, and eats cold cereal with fruit 2 of 3 meals a day. Heaven.
Hope the coffee date goes well!

  6. Oh, I do like the sound of your True Self. That Virtual Stranger is lucky.
My TS doesn't believe in housework of any kind, dances around the kitchen to loud music, has long soaky baths and reads in bed until her eyes get blurry. Might also have a face pack and paint her toenails.

    1. Your TS sounds fun. You just inspired me to smear a mud pack on my face!

  7. I think I would get along beautifully with your TS. Mine likes to do the same sorts of things. It's a bit scattered when I'm here alone ... I get lots done, but in a weird order, and an unconventional way, and it's practically impossible to tell my husband about it when he calls and asks, "What did you do today?"

    1. Exactly. Tho we who follow your blog know you get scads of very inspiring things done.

  8. Your true self is ADORABLE.

My true self watches a terrifying amount of television and eats chicken, avocado, and salsa wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla. And talks to herself out loud. I'd be hard-pressed to take her anywhere:).

    1. I talk to the cats aloud. But I'm sure they're listening.

  9. TS is taking the next four Fridays off to work in the garden and will pretty much follow your guidelines ... except for the mayo and cleaning parts. I'll add a bit of wine to replace them.

Glad things are going well, and meeting new people ... that's a really, really good thing. xoxo

    1. it is a good thing but I'm the first one here and I kind of wish I had a glass of wine...but just kind of.

  10. I love apples slathered in peanut butter and reading until dark and avocado sandwiches. Post-gym is a great idea. I used to think it best to meet a guy at the beach or the pool, then he'd see the bod and wet hair + no make-up straight away. No worries about any of that stuff later. I have different alone selves. There is the quiet reading and writing self who goes for walks and watches birds and makes special meals for herself and there is the Project Runway watching Kettle Chip dipping in Greek yogurt while in pajamas self. I like them both.

  11. My TS plays in the garden in between a bit of pottering around the house, picks up that magazine, moves that whatever to another place then move it back again, lie on floor read a chapter, back out to the garden, back inside for a drink, watch the birds stroke the cat chat to the plants, tell the snow peas how wonderful they are doing....then if must be time for a light evening snack glass of wine and some house or cooking programme - bliss! Spring here in New Zealand clocks have just gone forward for daylight savings,.....so back out into the garden.......!! That of course only happens when my darling is not around then its oh so much more organise!!!

  12. I wouldn't mention the apple with peanut butter to the stranger first thing. Maybe second.

  13. My ts would be up late at night and sleeping in late in the morning. This job won't allow either. Watching chick flicks and reruns of old tv, reading books, listening to music and trying very hard to not eat all the wrong things. Quilting, stitching and hanging with the dog. Haven't been by myself for over 10 years which is just fine because I spent so much time alone before.

  14. I read this early this morning and was too groggy to reply, being in my purest TS . A common theme among the commenters is the joy of meandering when alone. I love wandering through the house, the garden and doing nothing except maybe cleaning and filling the birdbath. Most of all, my TS loves not talking.

  16. Having some alone time to let my TS out to play is one of my favorite things! It usully involves a messy home mani, lots of trash tv, snacking and pottering about the house
