Flowers In The Green House: March 2013

For the newly single Sunday can be a hard day.

If it's warm and sunny then the garden beckons.

But when the skies and grey and the air chilly, it's best to stay inside and fill the house with green(s).

The roommate, the Colonel, is in the Army reserves.

When she's not marching off to the Pentagon, she's home in South Bend, Indiana with her family, working at Notre Dame University.

And we all know nobody celebrates St. Patrick's Day like the Fighting Irish.

So to ease her loneliness I brought her a potato planted with clover.

Cause nothing says Erin Go Bragh like an Idaho.

Gus put his own stamp on a little green vase with a rose, hydrangea, mums, deciduous huckleberry and rosemary.
He's deff following in my footsteps.
We put a vase of ranunculus and scabiosa in the bedroom.
In the living room a garden rose was left to open next to a magnolia branch.
Then we sat back and waited for some St. Patrick's Day magic.
And sure enough, along came a leprechaun.
And suddenly the room was full of rainbows and lucky charms.

He's magically delicious don't you know.

  1. Am so jealous. Gus already arranges flowers better than I do! And all so pretty. The Colonel is very lucky to have such a thoughtful roommate. Actually, she sounds quite interesting.

You definitely want to avoid Lowe's and Home Depot on Sundays - seriously. Too depressing.

You do sound like you are getting your groove back a bit. Lots of hugs. xoxo

ps: You've already had nine visitors this morning. Where are their flowers?

  2. The clover potato is cute but I love Gus' arrangement.

Garden work already. We're expecting snow tonight. I'm likely to be shoveling tomorrow at this time.

      Brrrr.

Oh well another day I don't have to cut down the liriope. Yay!

  3. Not sure I'll be in the garden for several more weeks. Very cold here in Toronto. Hope the roommate is working out OK. I can NEVER find ranunculous here which I find ridiculous....I love them and yours look so pretty.

  6. I can smell the roses and rosemary - very much appreciated as I watch our snow fall outside. Happy spring. And a fine 'welcome back from Florida.'

  7. I forgot to wear green yesterday and was pinched by several small leprechauns and one rather large one as well! The potato planter was quite clever. Hope the magic lingers at your house.

  8. That potato planted with clover is awesome. I've never seen one--I'd think they'd be all over Boston where they take St. Patrick's Day seriously. (Do they drink beer at ND?)

Great job, Gus! I imagine when he hits his late teens he'll buy an old panel truck and have a flower shop on wheels, kinda like a food truck, but with flowers.

Why are Sundays so much longer than Saturdays? (is Monday your Saturday?)

    Cutest li'l trail blazer ever!

    1. They drink nothing but beer at ND. And I think that includes all the other days that aren't St. Patty's Day.

      Flowers? In your house?

  9. Oh, yes, I love the clover in the potato. Very clever and charming!

Are you sure Gus wasn't about to destroy that arrangement right after you snapped the pic? My cat Tres is more of a bouquet destroyer (eater, to be exact), but so far he's left today's alone. Nothing too grasslike in it, I guess.

Your little leprechaun is adorable. So glad he could pay you a visit.

    1. As long as the arrangements are compact Gus just likes to fluff the flowers and lay down around them.

If they're tall he's swinging from the highest branch and then I'm mopping up water.

  12. I'm jealous of your cute little leprechaun!

Potato and clover--never seen it before but so appropriate.

Gus shows great promise--might watch him around baby's breath. I had a cat who loved to nibble BB in bouquets :)

    1. We tried to bring Gus into the shop but as soon as he got out of his cage he was down the stairs, into the basement and lost for like ever.

He's more of a work from home guy:-)

  14. Dear Jane,
Greetings frim your optimistic follower in Colorado
and thanks for your great pix, ideas and FITH. I
just forwarded a link to 15 friends, so your large circle
may continue to widen. Sundays are actually wonderful
when single; i guess i dont understand our society's
obsession with couplehood! You do what you want, when you want and how you (one) wants and when they need it, you reach out and help others. Have you been back
to that lovely Episcopal Church, I hope? I love the serenity of quiet Sundays and I never say or think "alone"
-- I prefer "solo" or "by myself," more positive. Find your solo strength, thank the Goddess for your good health
and keep on sharing with us, please!
    Peace be with you,

    1. Thank you for your inspiring words! And I usually love my alone time, but Sunday was my one full day with the GF, so it takes some getting used to.

My solo strength is just a heartbeat away.

    2. Jane, as the old cliches say, time really does heal. it seems to me, youre getting there and making good progress, steadily. My mother was the Queen of the Cliche and today is/would have been her birthday, so I will just quote one of her favorite cliches, Time heals all wounds. She loved watching the early forsythia bloom & often brought f. and quince branches inside to bloom in the house. Stay strong and keep on keepin' on. Peace

  15. Sorry for a few typos; these tiny phone screens are tricky. Mr Baby is just adorable this day and i, too, love the clover-filled potato. Temps in 50s-60s here & we are "hands in the dirt" in Denver, happily.

  19. Can I do FITH tomorrow instead? I've done trains and a partridge today, and the horror of seeing myself (or worse, The Gardener) turn into a train spotter has left me in a state of mild collapse.....

Your flowers are lovely. Our roses come from Africa at this time of year, and they are just AWFUL.....
