Report From The Trenches

There's a customer who comes into the shop on Saturday morning after yoga and buys a bunch of flowers.

She takes her time, browsing, chatting, picking this flower for its color, that for its scent, this one for its lack of toxicity for animals. She has 3 rescue cats, two male, one female, about 8 months old. Todays bouquet began with hyacinths.

It has only been the last 2 weeks I have overheard her conversation and been drawn out into the front of the shop to talk to her.  About cats.  Dear God.

She's very funny and we laugh long and loudly at the foibles of one another's kittens.  My co-workers roll their eyes at one another. I should be embarrassed but I'm not.  The cats bring so much pleasure and so little sleep I am totally lacking in shame over wearing my heart on my sleeve.

Monday they are off to the vet for their surgeries. Two kittens are enough. I asked my new friend if Gus will calm down a wee bit after losing his manhood.

She assured me he will not.  Hers, she said, strutted back into the house as if they had never left and nothing had been done to them.  Full of piss and vinegar she said.

Oh.

Good, I said weakly.

8 hours sleep, who needs it?

  1. Hello Jane:
They are, as you so well know, absolutely adorable. How we should love to take them home with us!!

  3. Well, maybe at some point in time they will calm, but now they want to entertain and be entertain.....who can blame them? They are so full of fun. Enjoy!

  4. I have a thing for orange cats having enjoyed 2 in my lifetime, but these guys are just irresistable. Toby and Tiger were just the same. I think it`s the orange that makes them a little `nutty`.

A house full of fur is a happy place!

  5. They're kittens, they're supposed to play endlessly and walk on your head while you're trying to sleep. What's with Gus and the appliances? Didn't he climb into the washing machine once?

  6. I agree with Amelia, they are kitties who want to play. We had two boys who were fixed and were still playful after but "eventually" you will have the nicest little lap warmers in the world. Love your kitty posts, remembrance of my two little guys.

  7. I swear the physicians should prescribe kittens for their patients who are depressed. Take two kittens and spice up your life!! Alice and Dorothy are two years old now, and they have calmed down into adult cats somewhat. They still have their same personalities, they just don't have such a hair trigger anymore.

  14. I think it takes a good two years for them to calm down. You look forward to that day. And when it happens, you'll miss the kitty shenanigans.
