A Slight Chance Of Rain

What's a girl to do?

Having left town moments before an earthquake hit, we now find ourselves caught between the devil, the deep blue sea and an impending hurricane.

Today at the beach the waves were high, the swimmers were brave (I was not among them) and the air was whipping our hats off our heads and our dresses above them.

With winds of up to 120 miles an hour expected here this weekend, we will flee to Connecticut tomorrow and wait out the storm before we board 2 boats and travel to Fire Island, New York.  If there still is a Fire Island left after Sunday.

GG and I have given serious thought as to what you all would advise us to do in these times of stress and then it came to us, as if in a dream:  Eat ice cream you would tell us. Jane, have a scoop of fresh peach ice cream.  And GG, how about a bowl fashioned out of a freshly made waffle, filled with peanut butter cup and oreo ice cream with hot fudge and peanut butter sauce.

There is talk New York City may be evacuated.  Our host and hostess will begin safety measures tomorrow, filling the bathtubs with water, buying a battery operated radio, laying in food and candles.

May all of you on the East Coast stay safe and out of harms way.

And for God's sake, have some ice cream.

  1. I was on Fire Island during Hurricane Bob--it was awesome. The waves and skies the next day were the most amazing I've ever seen.

  3. Jen, That's crazy. We traveled up to the island thru Bob only find no ferries running.

We awoke to the most beautiful day and traveled over calm waters. I remember it well.

What part of the island do you go to?

  4. I haven't been there for about 15 years, but we went to Fair Harbor and Saltaire for several years. They evacuated the island during Bob, but I decided to stay. I had a baby and a toddler and my best friend with me. We put away all the breakables. The wind was amazing, and it felt like an adventure--the anticipation! the possibilities! It wasn't a big deal as hurricanes go. In 1936 I think, there was a devastating hurricane there.

  5. I never thought of ice cream as part of one's hurricane preparations, but it makes perfect sense. Eat is now, before the power goes out and it melts in the freezer.

  8. You guys have all the excitement, and I admire your cheerfulness and willingness to eat ice cream as your hats are strewn about the place. Would you add some dark chocolate sprinkles to the next bowl, from me.

  9. You need to have a back up to ice cream. I advise plenty of chocolate. Take care.

  12. Here in the midwest, I am used to preparing for tornadoes... I guess preparing for a hurricane is not too much different. Radio, batteries, flashlights, extra food and water... and have the pets ready to evacuate. Hope you are well and safe in Connecticut and enjoy the ice cream!

  14. There's something wild and thrilling about riding out a hurricane - we did it a number of summers at my grandmother's home at VaBeach - but I fear Irene has more in store for us than we really want. Stay safe in Connecticut and then enjoy the lovely weather that always follows a big blow.

I hope it's pretty here so that I can cook breakfast Sunday on the grill - am assuming we will lose power overnight!

Tell GG I will arm wrestle her for that waffle-dish-based treat!! Travel safely. xo

  15. Sending lots of love, and laughter, from England. What images in my head of hats flying and dresses above your heads and that heavenly looking ice cream with the toffee sauce! You're my kind of women!

  16. My darling girls, eat ice cream and maybe some chocolate and some more fries and a lobster roll. That way you will be heavier for when the wind blows.

    Hold on tightly
